Eye Exams for Children, in Wainwright
Excellent Vision Will Help Your Child Excel!
Vision is imperative for learning in school, performing well on the sports field, and feeling self-confident while socializing with friends. When kids cannot see sharp, their education and development suffer. From the young age of six months, kids need acute vision to discover and understand the world around them. At Prairie Vision, our gentle and experienced eye doctor will examine your kid’s full visual system in the comfort of our eye clinic, located conveniently in Wainwright to care for patients in the central Alberta area.
Our team is devoted to optimizing your child’s eyesight, which goes far towards success in learning and growing up healthy! We believe that the basis of outstanding eye care depends upon understanding our patients, their lifestyle and unique visual needs. From the moment you and your child walk into our optometry office for a pediatric eye exam, we’ll invest into forming a strong, positive relationship with both of you. Please come prepared with any concerns or questions that you may have about your kid’s vision. You and your eyes will have our full, friendly attention!
What do our Wainwright optometrists check during a kid’s eye exam?
The exact tests and procedures that we will perform vary, depending on your child’s age, stage of development, visual complaints, health condition, medications, and family eye history. Every child is different, and we personalize our pediatric eye exams to consider the vision of each individual patient.
During the first few months of your baby’s life, many development milestones are reached! In particular, the visual system matures rapidly. Eye teaming and focusing come together as a functional unit, as the brain learns how to process visual cues that are conveyed from the eyes. With time, motor skills (think crawling, walking, eye-hand coordination, etc…) also depend heavily upon healthy eyesight. We will evaluate your child’s development and vision as they are bound together, to confirm that all is working well and on schedule.
Preschool Children, 2-5 years old
This time is active with learning! Kids begin to read and write, draw, and play games that rely upon acute perception and good coordination. Parents and teachers should watch for any signs of a vision condition, such as squinting, sitting close to screens, holding books up to the face, and a reluctance to do puzzles or workbook pages. If you detect any of these behaviors in your kid, reach out to schedule a pediatric eye examination in our Wainwright eye clinic. We’ll perform tests to inspect visual acuity and assess functional vision. We will check for problems such as lazy eye (amblyopia) and crossed eyes (strabismus), which can interfere with learning and cause uncomfortable vision. Headaches and eye fatigue when reading or writing are typical complaints.
School-Aged Kids, 6-18 years old
Undetected or untreated vision problems can negatively impact your child’s performance in the classroom, in sports, and with friends. Frustration is associated with the inability to see clearly, and low self-esteem and behavioral issues may result. If your child complains about double vision, losing their place while reading, difficulty maintaining focus or attention for long periods, frequent headaches, or constant blinking, it’s a red flag! These symptoms should serve as a warning that it is time to schedule an eye exam.
Fortunately, routine eye exams and the correct vision correction or treatment can put a stop to this downward spiral.
Our Wainwright eye exams will evaluate a wide range of essential vision-related skills, including:
- Accommodation (focusing ability)
- Visual acuity
- Binocularity (eye teaming)
- Tracking skills
- Hand-eye coordination
- Color vision
- Peripheral vision
- Eye health – we will inspect the condition of inner eye tissues, checking for any signs of disease or abnormality
After we complete your child’s eye exam, we’ll meet with you to share the results. If vision correction or treatment is required, we’ll figure out the best course of action together. Eyeglasses or contact lenses may be the best option for some vision conditions. Or an eye patch, ortho-k lenses, or vision therapy may be recommended. It all depends upon your kid’s full diagnosis. Many vision conditions are treated more efficiently while the eyes are still developing, which underscores the need for routine pediatric eye exams while your child is young.
We want your child to maximize his potential and to succeed in all parts of life. Quality vision is necessary to reach this goal, and we’re happy to help your kid excel along the way! We’re pleased to serve new and returning patients from the Wainwright region, including Lloydminster and other surrounding areas. Looking forward to seeing your children!
